This truck was purchased and used for a short while as an all terrain Off Road Office / RV. (Monster RV)
Our purpose was to utilize a mobile office that had off road capabilities with simple rugged reliability. This truck design serves it best in an off road environment with heavy loads at slow speeds.
This truck was purchased and put into service as a mobile office that would be able to access rough terrain, and then be stationary for long periods of time.
Additionally this truck had been sought out as it had very low mileage or use. It had been in military service as a mobile machine shop. The rear shop area is designed as a fully operational able portable shop.
Both side panels open easily with a small hand operated hydraulic jack. These panels open to create a work area from the sides of the truck, accessed by boarding ladders. The panels then become sloped shed style roof surfaces.
There are pole attachment frames that extend the lift up side panel that create simple frames for canvass garage areas on each side of the sides. The pole attachment frames can be included: however no specific canvas covering were included with the truck.
The rear access panel of the shop opens also, exposing all three sides of the interior.
No machine shop equipment is currently installed. Numerous steel heavy duty storage compartments and drawer units are still installed.
The front portion of the shop van area has an overhead air tank and a PTO belt driven generator on the floor.
The rear galley access has storage and shelves. This area was used for bunks.
The interior space is tight, with low head room, (5?8?) This interior feels like a submarine. All steel with all kinds of nooks and crannies for storage.
Our needs included Office, Shower and sleeping areas. Although tight, this design functioned well and had the added benefit of being 100% lockable.
This truck is large, and attracts a lot of attention. A continuous flow of curious people would stop by to have their photo taken with this truck.

Military Vehicles are fascinating as they are function only vehicles. They have been designed to perform certain task; this is what they do best. Because this function is incorporated into the design of the vehicle, No form is included within the design. This is typical with all military equipment in general, this is what gives it the brute all business look (thus the unique form).
The GOOD:
Low Low miles
Excellent overall condition
Newer / Matching tires
Strong Motor. Starts easy, Runs Well
Transmission Strong
Heavy duty everything
steers well
Tight rattle free drive train
Solid body; Straight bed
Run Flat wheels
Tows well
Newer Batteries
Good Electrical system, no birds? nest of wire.
Original complete truck with very little actual use while in military service.
This truck appears to have been designed and prepared for harsh use: However shows no signs of ever being deployed. The overall condition of this vehicle is very good.
I currently drive as an insured vehicle; however do not run plates on it as Military Vehicles technically do not have state plates. This works very well as it looks normal. State DMV do not stop Military vehicles. I do not stop at weigh stations and have never had a problem.
The manufacture date on this is likely in the late 80s or early 90s. The title date is in the early 70s as M-Series titles are based on design date, not manufacture date. This can be registered as a historical vehicle or RV with habitable space conversion.
The BAD:
Low fuel mileage? This truck is best suited for off-road capabilities. Low speed, Heavy loads, Rough terrain; MPG at cruising highway road speeds is approximately 3-4 miles per gallon.
Low road speed. With 6:56 gear ratio, this truck is not a speed demon, It will reach and run out (cruise) at 65 mph: however the 250 Cummins motor is a low horse power / high torque motor and is best suited for slow off-road speeds. Careful planning and driving habits are required to maintain steady safe highway speeds.
This truck is like driving an older underpowered large truck, where you have to shift down and maintain RPMs rather than speed. Additionally any downhill decent has to be utilized for the momentum of the next uphill accent, while maintain critical RPM limits. Simply put. This is not a road truck by today?s standard. It will travel the interstate, but it is best suited for low speed / high torque applications.
This truck does very well on two lane highways and back roads where speed limits peak at about 55 mph.
Replacement part planning is a must. Although military parts are easy to come by, you must plan for it. Typical commercial truck repair shops will not have these parts or know where to get them.
Small Common M-Series parts need to be stocked and available. Example: the headlights are 24 volts; no auto store in the country is going to have these.
With a little study, today?s online access allows for easy parts locations; however you need to know this prior to needing a part.
General maintenance and repairs are easy as these trucks are designed to be field repaired by common men with common mechanical skills.
In the right environments this type of equipment works and performs well. Especially when you start with a clean un-molested vehicle.
This vehicle requires CDL class B licenses as the GVWR is in excess of 26,001 lbs. and it is an air brake vehicle. But if you play with big trucks, you probably already have this.
One minor issue I am aware of.
1. On my 1400 mile return trip from the East coast; to the Mid-west, the speedometer cable broke. This is common on the M-series vehicles and are easily replaced: However the current mileage of 2703 is showing approximately 1000 miles less than actual.
